The Starcraft Community - Surprising Turn

I'm almost hesitant to express my opinion, but hell I've been wrong before when I jumped to conclusions and I'm feeling hopeful so, I'm gonna go for it!

I've made so many posts about the BM and hate that goes on in the Starcraft Community as a whole and that's like saying a Mexican robbed me, so all Mexicans are thieves. It's just wrong!

I've praised It's Gosu as having a group of the nicest people in the gaming community and I've yet to change my mind about that. Yeah, there's going to be an idiot every now and then, but overall they're pretty damn nice.

Voss is one of their regular posters. He has a blog on It's Gosu @ http://www.itsgosu.com/game/sc2/blogs/my-life-as-a-gamer-12_97 He also streams @ http://www.twitch.tv/voss423# And he's the mod for It's Gosu streams.

He's one of the nice guys. A hardcore gamer, (When he's not in school)who has plans for his future, which include enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He expressed his discontent with the online BM in a comment to one of my posts and offered suggestions to avoid the haters.

Lately, I've read a lot of posts on Team Liquid with guys who take exception to the BM in the community. Naturally, these posts make me smile with the thought that there is hope for the future.

Something took place, recently, that involved Boxer's (the grandfather at 30 of e-sports) team, SlayerS. They recruited a female, Eve, to play on their all male team. After numerous slurs and, from what I read, pornographic pics Photoshopped, Jessica, Boxer's wife and manager of SlayerS, took a stand to defend Eve and the team. She was met with criticism, but more of the comments in the TL thread supported her decision to post their side of the story and expose these trolls for what they are.

For those of you, who say "Don't feed the trolls," "Ignore the haters," I say, wrong! It's my contention that once these low self-esteemed dudes, who have nothing better to do than to harass those who enjoy RTS and want to have fun, realize that their kind are frowned upon in the community and unwelcome, they will start to disappear or better yet, manner up.

Amirite? I dare anyone to disagree. lol

i'm goning to disagree, b/c you dared me. lol

you've made posts like this b4 putting down the community for the bm and no hope for recovery.

what makes you think things are chaning? i was in avilo's stream last night when he play destiny and the trolls were spamming like crazy and no mod to stop them. you're always there. where were you?

i dont see it changing anytime soon, lil miss sunshine.

I think this is wishful thinking on your part. As long as there's an internet that offers anonymity, there's going to be rude, bad mannered idiots.

After you said so many nice things about It's Gosu, I was expecting you to do a follow-up like you did with GR. lol Wait. Just wait.

LOL Anon #1. Do you have to have a blogspot account to post as Anon? If you don't, then I can understand you posting as anon. w/e

And I was there last night, just not logged in. When I saw all the mayhem, I logged in and starting banning the trolls and spammers

The posts I've read lately have given me hopes for the community. Idealistic maybe, but yeah.

I don't read a lot of TL anymore, and haven't been to GR for a long while, because posting there is just futile. Still I think there are some nice peeps on GR, too. I'm just saying I shouldn't have lumped 'em all together.

Anyways, I can see clearly now, cuz "lil miss sunshine" got rid of the dark clouds that were bringing me down.

Hey, Anon #2. Are you trying to trix me by using proper caps? lol

Yeah, I expect as It's Gosu grows, there will be more idiots IF admin allows there to be. *shrugs*

And no, I still think It's Gosu is one of the nicest, most accepting places to post - just wish there were more posters and an easier way to get around the site.

Combating the trolls and the other nuisances of the internet is no longer a question of sending a message, that has been done many times.

I value anonymity as a great thing that allows many to express sincerely held beliefs without the fear of repercussions; I would never consider the thought of abolishing anonymity in itself.

My proposal would instead be to constantly enforce moderation where moderation is in order. It's a touchy subject where that is, and I think it can be a fine line to cross; however, for every tough case where discussion is in order, there are a hundred where moderation should be an absolute standard.

Well, linduxed, you confused me with the "abolishing anonymity" line, because I don't recall mention of such a thing in your thread on TL or here.

Last night, in the chat stream I moderate, a kid annoyed a couple of the viewers. He wasn't BM, just making obnoxious comments.

One of the viewers said, "Can't you ban him?" Of course I could, but why would I? I told the kid that requested the ban to "click on the ignore" button.

So, I agree with you - as I did in your thread on TL. But just putting the trolls on ignore, without them knowing does little to remedy the problem. As far as they know, their spam/comments are being seen.

After I told the guy to put him on ignore, the kid stopped being obnoxious. It's no fun, if you know you're being ignored.

The night before that a similar situation took place. A couple lines of shrugs and table flipping were met with "Thanks for the pretty pictures" and the kid realized that the chat was a nice place to be, I guess. He was polite after that and stayed in chat the rest of the night.

When, however, it becomes a case of mob trollers/spammers they have to be stopped.

And, once again, I agree with you that cases like that need strict moderation. If the streamer is BM himself, the chatters feel free to troll and the mods let them, because "It's funny."

In that case, our only recourse is to not support those streamers. If you don't like the BM that goes on in like an Idra stream or Destiny stream, then why would you go there?

Still and all, it's just recently that I've seen people, like you, stand up against trolls/spammers and I seriously believe that as more people jump on that bandwagon there will be less and less of the BM in the SC community.
