Okay, all right, I said that I'd never mention the NASL's name again, but someone referred me to Reddit http://www.reddit.com/r/starcraft/comments/ikbgm/why_should_we_support_nasl/ and a post that was made there regarding the amateurish production and quality of the GRAND finals.
The comments that followed were for the most part in agreement with the OP. As a matter of fact the majority of the posters complained about stream quality, audio, production, lighting...well everything, and quite hilariously.
It's a shame that something as big as a league formed to represent North America, turned out to be a total fiasco - indeed an embarrassment.
Granted, MLG had it's problems in Dallas, but they corrected their problems by the time MLG Columbus rolled around. According to some of the posters, NASL is getting worse, not better. "It's falling apart." "Total fail"
I haven't kept up with NASL for reasons I've stated in previous posts. Today, for the first time, I tuned in, because of what I read on Reddit and in TL. People weren't just complaining, some were angry. Angry that they paid $25. for an almost unwatchable show. Several posts proclaimed, "Never again."
Now, it's my understanding that if you don't pay for HQ, you don't get to join chat. Guess they weren't receiving enough revenue so they decided to nickel and dime viewers. There was also an announcement in TL that Incontrol quit. Never read it, because I could care less so, I can't verify that. I do know, however, that he left SOTG; I was tuned in when he made that announcement.
When I pulled up the NASL stream, there was a blonde walking around with a mic looking for people to interview. Chat, after like 15 minutes, finally appeared and the comments were funnier there than on Reddit. Someone said, "They think a blonde is going to make us watch this - we came to see Starcraft."
The producers probably figured that flaunting pretty gals around would distract viewers from the poor quality of the overall production. From what I read their strategy didn't work.
I've seen thread titles in TL asking for input to make NASL better. Either they didn't listen or are so green that they have no idea how to rectify the problems. Cartoons were all over the place making fun of the NASL, it's production, the casters. Unfortunately, THEY are representing North America and it IS an embarrassment. But then, I kinda thought it might fail from the onset so, I can't say I'm surprised.
Sponsors may have been blinded by the NASL hype just like some of the SC community, but after this performance, I wonder how many sponsors will be dumb enough to continue backing them if they don't up their game. Still and all they had over 45,000 viewers, although someone said, "Yeah, it's like watching a train wreck."
The unfortunate part is that there were a lot of good gamers competing, but very little was mentioned by viewers about the games. They were either too busy making jokes about the quality or complaining about the quality.
Like I said, I don't watch it and only tuned in to see what people were complaining about...there wasn't a match in progress, but I think Sen v Darkforce was up next. I didn't hang around for more than 10 minutes.
Now, the question in my mind is - do they have the $100,000. that was promised to the winners? Hopefully, that wasn't just a hype.

The End of the North American Starcraft League
How dumb can ya get? Well, pretty damn dumb in my case, because I believe justice should be served using legal methods. Okay, I grew up in a home where the patriarch, a prominent business owner, tried to instill in me that the only time you turn to the law is when they're in your back pocket. Wow! Are you talkin' 'bout making offers they can't refuse? No! That's just wrong and I won't abide by that mentality - ever; although sometimes, I admit, the temptation was great. I mean you dial a number - problem solved.
As a person who prides herself on not taking life too seriously, avilo kept telling me, "You're taking this defamation of character thing too seriously. You're dealing with idiots." OMG! He was right! I had already contacted my Chicago lawyers and they turned to their California contacts. Yep, I would not hesitate to bring suit against everyone involved.. On the other hand, it was enough for avilo to know he was innocent and that I and those who know him believed in his innocence.
Okay, so I called off the lawyers and said, "It's apparent that the people who are running the NASL have little business acumen. Maybe they're idiots, but surely the people at Uservoice aren't." Even though he gave me the go-ahead to contact them, he told me I was wasting my time. "Are you kidding? They're business people. Of course not. They're not going to get involved in harboring a criminal, or be responsible for false accusations." Avilo just laughed.
With everything that the NASL did to ruin Avilo's reputation (which, I believe was intentional) we both still wished them luck in their endeavors. The league (mostly hand-picked despite Xeris' explanation on how the 50 made the team. I mean InControl? *rolls eyes) in North America is the biggest and best thing to happen to e-sports ever. And while the organization of the NASL lacked miserably and was peppered with lies, hype, contradictions, etc. at least they were giving it the ol' college try.
I hate to admit I'm wrong, especially when it comes to avilo being right. (Don't tell him that, his ego is big enough already lol). But he was right. Uservoice could have cared less. In essence I was told by the real CEO, Richard White, that they have to protect their clients. Hmmmm? So is Athene a client of Uservoice? He is the one, after all that hacked votes, not avilo - or anyone avilo knows. And if Athene is a client and their client is the NASL, does that mean that Athene is part of the NASL? Now I was really determined to get to the bottom of this.
Once again, I contacted Uservoice informing them that I would advise avilo to contact the Internet Crime Complaint Center, a branch of the government that handles cyber crime. His response, "Thanks for the update." lol
Avilo and I had a good laugh over that one. "And this is a CEO of a business?" That's when I realized that avilo was right. And whilst I still believe that justice is on the side of the innocent, it's the end of the NASL as far as I'm concerned. When you're dealing with people that could care less how they achieve success, there's bound to be failure in the future.
By the way, today in San Fran, not unreasonably far from the NASL and Uservoice headquarters, there's a St. Stupid Day's Parade. If you're in the area, you're bound to see some some familiar faces :D

North American Starcraft League Can You Say Defamation of Character?
Yesterday, Xeris, a representative of the NASL, posted an accusatory thread on TeamLiquid against Avilo, using statements like:
"You used the same account but changed IP's every time, which was pretty funny. "
"[votes]...were also almost all made from one account. So, am I believing you or the CEO of uservoice? "
"What I said was that you used the same account for your votes, whether it was you specifically or
someone doing it for you."
"...knowing that you possibly rigged the voting"
These were PMs - standing for "Private Messages," which he made public on a forum. And whilst he sort of retracted his statements and much later apologized in a backhanded manner, the damage is done.
Any publicity, even if it's bad, is better than no publicity; however, there's an exception when it comes to ruining a good man's name. "A man is only as good as his name." Xeris made an inflammatory statement public, based on circumstantial evidence.
How many times have you heard a judge tell court reporters, "Strike that from the record?" And tell the jury, "The jurors will disregard that last statement.?" As for me, it's rather difficult to forget something once I've heard it. Sure, as a juror you can't take it into account, but it is, nevertheless, in the back of your mind, embedded in your subconscious.
"The polling doesn't matter, but someone trying to cheat the system does matter." Obviously, anyone with an ounce of sense knew it was fake since it's inception, but yesterday in his thread Xeris admitted it "So we
can't in good conscience keep you on a list to be considered knowing that you possibly rigged the voting."
According to the CEO of Uservoice some 20,000 votes were fraudulent, "...But HE [Avilo] was smart enough to change IPs." The CEO said "he" implying Avilo, without a trace of evidence.
Firstly, I question why the NASL waited until the last minute to remove Avilo from the roster? They knew weeks ago that someone named Athene went in and hacked votes to spell his name. Avilo told them and others what happened. So, why wait and then make public statements inferring that Avilo is a cheat? "It could have been someone else doing it for him."
Secondly, I question the number of votes with which Avilo was left. Many of GameReplay members gave him their votes. I gave him all my votes, plus forwarded the voting link to my email contacts. Viewers of his stream voted for him. People from FB and his email contacts voted for him. It was one of those "You tell three people, they tell three people, and so on and so on and so on." So, for Avilo to be left with 43 votes, as is reflected on the "fake" roster, is incomprehensible.
All this, however, is irrelevant. The point is Xeris, representing the NASL, publicly attacked Avilo's honesty and integrity based on speculation. Since that thread was made, Avilo has been the victim of public contempt and ridicule by his haters, and some who were his fans, but now have doubts. This thread has caused Avilo emotional suffering and distress. When he tried to defend himself, he was greeted with even more vile accusations.
I've known Avilo personally for quite a while now. I know his moral ethics and can say, without a doubt, that he had nothing to do with vote hacking. While the 13 pages of mostly forum bashing was eventually closed by the moderator, Kennigit; I, for one, wish it had been closed before Avilo had to endure pages of bashing by people who obviously have neither the intellect, nor the compassion to see that Avilo is the victim.
Fortunately, there were posters, who whilst remaining neutral, supported Avilo. Ipp and Liquid Tyler both made lucid, intelligent and well thought-out posts. Many people agreed with Tyler, and Kennigit, whilst remaining impartial closed the thread with Tyler's brilliant post.
Nevertheless, Avilo's veracity is on the line and might very well affect not only his StarCraft career, but any and all potential employment opportunities. Therefore, it is my intention to personally contact the CEO of Uservoice to determine what proof they could possibly have that Avilo was in any way involved in this malicious act.

UPDATE: I tried reaching Uservoice several times via telephone on the 24th and again on the 25th. Finally, on the 25th, I sent a message via Uservoice help desk and within a couple hours "Daniel" responded with an email and asked me how he could help. I returned his email with the problems relative to avilo, the NASL and the accusations regarding the voting process. Waiting to hear back from him.
However, after checking the Uservoice team, it appears that "Daniel," who I am almost certain is the same Daniel that handled the NASL account is not the CEO as stated by Xeris, but the Business Developer. Guess that's irrelevant at this point, anyway. lol

More On The North American Starcraft League Voting Sham
After checking the voting roster today to see how many more negative comments were left by haters of avilo, I attempted to reply to the last poster, who said "Never heard of him. American/Korean?" My response was brief and to the point:
"He's American and soon he will be as popular nationwide as he is on the east coast, where he's won numerous LAN Tournaments. Thank you haters for getting his name out there. :)"
(Hey, like I've always said, "Bad publicity is better than no publicity." Look what it's done for Charlie Sheen).
Hmmmm? Strangely, it wouldn't post. Suspicious? You bet! When I talked to others that had only praise for avilo, they too attempted to post a comment and could not.
Wtf, NASL? You only posting negative comments about avilo? Comments that imply he's a cheater and hacked votes? I can assure you he doesn't have the time or the soul to do something so underhanded. Or avilo made a new account and is posting as arkansassy? Yeah, right! Are you only posting comments that your small minds believe are funny? Like references to him being a "piece of shit" a "douche" etc.? Yes, immature minds think that's hilarious. Their vocabulary is such that they can't express themselves with eloquence. I'd venture to say that the vast majority don't even know why they don't like avilo. But I know why.
Yesterday, on the stream some guy said, "Why don't Incontrol and Idra like avilo?" I simply replied, "There's no explaining bad taste."
For some reason, unbeknownst to me, avilo - the guy who isn't more bad mannered than any other player, and is not more outspoken than others, has been the one chosen to be verbally abused by mindless creatures, who don't know any better.
We all know these people. Think back in history to when crucifixion was popular. No, I'm not comparing avilo with JC, it was merely an example. *rolls eyes* What I am doing is comparing the avilo haters with the sheeple, who simply follow the most popular vote, because...because...well because they're sheeple.
Avilo doesn't have it in him to "hate." He's smart and doesn't waste his energy on such a negative emotion. He would rather save his energy to beat the haters; to own em; to show them his strength in character both in and out of the game.
Why avilo, or anyone else for that matter, would even want to be part of the NASL group is beyond me, but that's what he wants.All I can say for myself is, it's a good thing the Salem Witch Hunts aren't still popular.
P.S. Incontrol made an application video. Ummmmm...was that to prove this wasn't a sham? Pullllleeeeeeeze!

The North American Starcraft League - Fact or Fiction
Obviously by now, you can tell I'm a SC2 fan. The game is exciting. Did I ever wish it would grow as big in North America as it is in Korea? Hell, yeah. It not only means that aspiring pro-gamers can earn money, but they can make the money doing what they enjoy doing.
For weeks now a gamer by the name of Incontrol has been teasing players with an announcement so spectacular that SC2 gamers were abuzz. Finally, after much hype, the news was revealed. The NASL (North American Star League). What is it? By most posts in the forums, I don't think anyone knows. What are its intentions? That too is unclear. When the people that run the show compare SC2 to basketball, they obviously don't know what the game is. But it doesn't matter, because most hopeful pro-gamers won't even get the chance to shoot a hoop.
Can I just say (well I guess I can because it's my blog lol) I think it's a get rich quick scheme. Unfortunately, the only ones who are gonna make any money are the folks promoting this. They're going to sell their "live" games (which, according to the information I'm getting aren't live) to a bunch of idiots, who will purchase the games?
Whoa! Excuse me, but when I buy a pay-per-view for let's say a championship boxing match (even that sport might relate to SC2 better than basketball) I'm watching it live. *shrugs* Okay, I don't get the meaning "live" as defined by the NASL.
What was really fun was when they posted a "Who's your favorite player" roster. Yeah people like you and me were able to vote for their favorite player. Wait a minute! Is the NASL going to have a league of "skilled" players or "popular" players? Or was this just a gimmick to acquire your email address? And if it is the latter, for what reason?
I, for one, smell a rat. As a matter of fact, they claim that the roster they posted was hacked. Unknown players were beating out well-known ones in popularity. How exciting to see your name on page one with thousands of votes. How disheartening to see your name disappear from the roster. "No way you could have that many votes."
Well, if you were out politicking - which unfortunately a person was forced to do by these standards - then, yes, it's possible.
Avilo, whom I'll use as an example, because I know him personally, put himself out there. He hoped, like many others that he'd be chosen by the NASL. HA! It's all a sick joke. You vote for your favorite, but NASL already knows who they're going to choose for the league. The most "popular" gamers, not exactly the most skilled. Why else would Idra come back to America from Korea? Well, according to one poster, because he couldn't win a game in Korea and they don't want him anymore. Okay, I just laughed out loud.
Back on topic - The competition for the NASL isn't working your way in by winning games, it's if you're popular and on a team or have a sponsor. For the tens of thousands out there, who are excellent players, but aren't on a team and don't have a sponsor is their dream dead? Well, they've lost this round.
Even though many people supported avilo - who is a skilled player and has won tournaments and even beaten a lot of the "popular" players - he was deleted from the roster. When he contacted the powers that be to find out why, he was told "it was an accident." They returned him to the roster with his plus 13,000 votes. Why? Because it doesn't matter. NASL knows who the chosen few are and as hopeful as he is that the NASL is on the level, he's not on their list of the elitist.
And that, my friends, is life and other fantasies. :(

When he contacted the powers that be to find out why, he was told "it was an accident." They returned him to the roster with his plus 13,000 votes. Why? Because it doesn't matter. NASL knows who the chosen few are and as hopeful as he is that the NASL is on the level, he's not on their list of the elitist.
And that, my friends, is life and other fantasies. :(
